‘Turandot’ Takes Centerstage in Washington National Opera’s ‘Opera in the Outfield’
By Francisco SalazarWashington National Opera’s Opera in the Outfield returns to Nationals Park on August 24 with a screening of WNO’s sold-out production of “Turandot” from May 2024.
The evening will be hosted by WNO General Director Timothy O’Leary and WNO Artistic Director Francesca Zambello and sponsored by Mars.
In a statement, O’Leary said, “Opera in the Outfield is one of Washington National Opera’s best traditions. I can’t imagine a better way to start our season than with this fun free event where everyone in the community is invited. Come early to play games, watch pre-show performances, and enjoy Nationals Park’s incredible ballpark menu. Then the opera Turandot will be screened on the jumbotron with English captions. Our Turandot was a sold-out sensation last season and now everyone can take this opportunity to see it for free! WNO especially would like to thank our long-time sponsor Mars, Inc. in making this event possible.”
“We are thrilled to once again partner with the Kennedy Center and Washington National Opera to help bring more moments of everyday happiness to thousands of families in the DMV metro area,” Darin Fernandez, Vice President Mars Sponsorships and Sports Marketing of Mars added. “Fans who are able to come out and attend Opera in the Outfield are sure to enjoy fun activities and beautiful performances, which we are delighted to bring to the community.”
The new production that will be presented is directed by Francesca Zambello and features a new ending by composer Christopher Tin and Succession writer Susan Soon He Stanton. The cast includes Ewa Płonka in the title role, Yonghoon Lee as the mysterious prince Calaf, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha as Liù, and Peixin Chen as Timur.
