San Francisco Opera’s 2026–27 Season is set to open with Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.”

The opera will be presented in Claus Guth’s production, remounted for San Francisco Opera by director Katherine M. Carter.

Music Director Eun Sun Kim will lead the opera with an all star cats that includes Mongolian baritone Amartuvshin Enkhbat in the title role.

He will be joined by Italian soprano Eleonora Buratto as Amelia Grimaldi, American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Jacopo Fiesco, and Mexican American tenor Joshua Guerrero as Gabriele Adorno in his company debut.

“Simon Boccanegra” holds an major place in San Francisco Opera history. Originally scheduled to open the 1940 season as a West Coast premiere event, it had to be postponed to a non-opening position in the 1941 season because of baritone Lawrence Tibbett’s cancellation due to ill health. The company has since presented Verdi’s wot with such legends as Tibbett, Leonard Warren, Tito Gobbi, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, Carol Vaness, Barbara Frittoli, Ezio Pinza, Boris Christoff , Giorgio Tozzi, Martti Talvela, Cesare Siepi, and Samuel Ramey.

The opera will be performed through Sept. 27 for a total of six performances. The Sept. 19 performance will be live-streamed at 2 p.m. PT and available to watch on demand for 48 hours beginning September 20 at 10 a.m. PT.
