Tri-Cities Opera to Present Pocket Opera Project

By Francisco Salazar

Tri-Cities Opera is set to present the Pocket Opera Project: Stories of The Southern Tier.

The presentation will be on Oct. 1 at the Tri-Cities Opera Center in Binghamton, NY.

The hour-long Pocket Opera Project will consist of four mini operas based on short stories written by local middle-school students. Stage Director/Mentor/Librettist Santino DeAngelo and Composer/Project Coordinator Canaan Harris will take attendees through the process of creating an opera, leading to the first performance ever of these “pocket operas” created in collaboration with Binghamton University student composers.

This year’s selected works are “We Survived the Flood of 1935!” by Archer McIntyre of Whitney Point, “Train 61” by Sindhi Zhou of Vestal, “Roberson’s Ghosts” by Adrien Smith of Whitney Point, and a special workshop “The Magical Carousel” by Lora Stephens of Whitney Point.

The works were initially submitted by students as short stories and were then transformed into a “pocket opera” with theatrical and musical moments.
