By David Salazar

Toronto City Opera in Canada has started streaming a double bill of “The Telephone” and “La Voix Humaine.”

The two works were recorded as a live performance without audiences due to the continued concerns over COVID-19.

“The Telephone,” an opera by Gian Carlo Menotti, was performed by Nicole Dubinsky and Johnathon Kirby; Dubinsky played the role of Lucy England while Kirby took on Ben Upthegrove.

Dubinsky, a founding member and contributor of Opera Sustenida, performed with Toronto City Opera in a production of “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” Meanwhile Kirby has performed with such companies as Edmonton Opera, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Calgary Opera, among others.

Meanwhile, Poulenc’s monopera starred Rachel Krehm. The soprano is a co-founder of Opera 5 and has appeared with such companies as Kingston Symphony Orchestra, Canzona Chamber Players, and Tapestry Opera, among others.

Jennifer Tung served as artistic director on the production with Ivan Jovanovic as the Music Director. Video was directed by Kelley Mitchell with Jooseph Pepelnak taking on production.

The two operas run for 90 minutes.
