Top 7 Operas to See This Weekend – North America (12/7-9)

Amahl & The Night Visitors, Hansel & Gretel Dominate Weekend

By David Salazar

Remember when we said last week that this month would feature one particular opera rather heavily? Well, it’s that time of the year.

And since it is the holiday season, we are going to give a few more companies the benefit of the doubt with works being presented more than once.

Cendrillon – Lyric Opera of Chicago

Massenet’s take on the classic Cinderella story has gained in prominence over the years. It is still rarely performed, but this gem deserves the attention it is getting. The performance on Saturday is the third of the run and the last before the January performances. Alice Coote, Siobhan Stagg, and Elizabeth Bishop lead the cast.

La Traviata – Metropolitan Opera

The Met Opera’s new production of the Verdi classic will get its second performance with Juan Diego Flórez and Diana Damrau as the doomed lovers. Quinn Kelsey plays Germont in what should be a strong and powerful music feast.

Amahl and the Night Visitors – On Site Opera / Fargo-Moorhead Opera

The Christmas classic will be showcased with two different companies, including On Site Opera, which will present the work at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen on Saturday. Fargo-Moorhead Opera will showcase the opera on Friday and Sunday.

The Little Prince – Opera Parallèle

Opera Parallèle opens its new season with three consecutive performances of “The Little Prince,” which brought great success to the company a year ago. Rachel Portman’s score and Nicholas Wright’s libretto are perfect for young audiences, making this a great night out for the family.

El Rey Nacio – PuntaClassic and Asociación de Nuestra Señora de Luján

If you want another Christmas Opera to get you in the holiday mood, the opera by José Luis González Moya makes its U.S. Premiere in New York City on Saturday and Sunday. It stars Luz del Alba Rubio, tenor Mario Arevalo, baritone Gerardo de la Torre, soprano Maria Fernanda Brea-Charnin, baritone Miguel Angel, mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna, tenor César Delgado, and soprano Eugenia Forteza.

Hansel and Gretel – San Diego Opera Association / Opera Orlando / Los Angeles Opera

The classic children’s tale is also a holiday classic and this weekend it gets performances with not one or two, but three companies, all of them in warm climates.

We recommended LA’s rendition before and this week’s Sunday performance is the third-to-last show. Meanwhile, Opera Orlando will put on two shows on Saturday and Sunday, as will San Diego Opera.
