The Tonhalle Zürich has announced that it has shut down until further notice while the Theater Basel has canceled all performances until at least Nov. 1, 2020.

In a statement, the Theater Basel said it would inform spectators about further developments.

The news comes a day after the Swiss government announced a set of drastic measures on Oct. 28, 2020, which limits the number of spectators at cultural events to 50 persons. Accordingly, opera houses and concert halls reacted with imminent closures.

Switzerland is undergoing a second COVID-19 wave, which prompted the Swiss government to react with a set of very strict measures in a bid to contain the contagion. The country has logged 5,596 new infections on Oct. 22, 2020, a new high for the country.
