Tom Guthrie, Sarah Latto & Paragon Singers Partner for ‘Messiah 250’

By Logan Martell

Paragon Singers, director Tom Guthrie, and music director Sarah Latto have partnered together for “Messiah 250,” a reinterpretation that brings the work beyond the concert hall.

Originally conceived in 2019, “Messiah 250” will include a series of workshops, a Taster day for beginners, a “Come and Sing ‘Messiah’” day, a day for young singers at Bath Spa University, and a partnership with Julian House homelessness service.

Students from Bath Spa University’s film unit will document the rehearsals and creative process leading up to the performance, a dramatization of “Messiah” at St. Swithin’s Church on March 5, 2022.

The project also celebrates the city of Bath’s historical association with Handel’s famous oratorio, being introduced to it by William Herschel, the musician and astronomer who would be credited for the discovery of Uranus. Since then, the city has performed the work annually through war and hardship until the present day.
