Three Artists Cancel Moscow ‘Tristan und Isolde’

As the Russian war on Ukraine continues to escalate, more performers are canceling their planned performances in Russia.

According to Tagesspiegel, after the announcement of a “Tristan und Isolde” in Moscow, three of its cast members distanced themselves from the commitment.

The performance, which is set for November, saw tenor Andreas Schager remove his name from the announcement while baritone Matthias Goerne explained that his name had come to the side of the Moscow Conservatory without his knowledge or involvement.

Meanwhile, Torsten Kerl who was also set to perform in Russia and who had verbally agreed to take on the title role under Teodor Currentzis, sent a letter to Russia last week noting, “The partial mobilization has changed the situation for me and my partly Russian and partly Ukrainian family. Due to this renewed escalation, it is no longer justifiable for me, both humanly and morally, to perform as an artist in Russia at this point in time.”

The cancelations are the latest as the war on Ukraine continues and just days after Russia annexed three parts of Ukraine. It also comes as Teodor Currentizis is coming under more scrutiny for not committing to a side nor putting a statement out. His concert in Koln was recently canceled and his Dortmund concert is currently under consideration.
