Théatre du Châtelet Dismisses Artistic Director

By Logan Martell

The leadership of the Théatre du Châtelet announced on Friday that it will dismiss the organization’s Artistic Director, Ruth Mackenzie.

According to a statement from the theatre, the decision came as a result of “financial and management problems” following an internal audit.

In the past, Mackenzie has served as Artistic Director of the Holland Festival, as well as directing the London Cultural Olympics and the Manchester International Festival. She is also the first woman and non-French person to be Artistic Director of the Théatre du Châtelet, where she also led a recent renovations project over a period of 28 months.

Mackenzie has described her dismissal as “brutal and inexplicable,” and comes as the theatre’s 2019-20 season was unable to be completed to the outbreak of Covid-19.
