Switzerland’s Theatre Basel has unveiled its 2023-24 season. Here is rundown of all the opera performances.

New Productions

First up is “Das Rheingold” in a production by Benedikt von Peter and Caterina Cianfarini. The opera, which will be conducted by Jonathan Nott, stars Nathan Berg, Michael Borth, Ronan Caillet, Michael Laurenz, Solenn’ Lavant Left, and Lucie Peyramaure, among others.

Performance Dates: Sept. 9, 2023 – June 22, 2024 

Next up is “Rheinklang – A Choral Ritual” by Matthew Herbert. The work, which is based on Wagner, features the Theater Basel Choir.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19 – Oct. 6, 2023 

Hans Werner Kroesinger and Regina Dura will present another Wagner-inspired work “Gold Shine, and Gods.” Essentially, it presents “The Ring” as a one-woman show with Ansi Verwey at the piano.

Performance Dates: Sept. 10 – Oct. 8, 2023

Then “Die Walküre” takes the stage in a production by Benedikt von Peter and Caterina Cianfarini. Jonathan Nott conducts a cast starring Ric Furman, Artyom Vasnetsov, Nathan Berg, Theresa Kronthaler, and Trina Moller.

Performance Dates: Sept. 16, 2023 – June 23, 2024

“The Yopougon Ring” is “a performance between dance, discourse and pop culture, the transcultural collective around Monika Gintersdorfer and Knut Klassen explodes Richard Wagner’s monumental work.” It stars Hauke Heumann, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Gadoukou LaStar, Cora Frost, and Annik Prisca Agbadou, among others.

Performance Dates: Sept. 22 – Oct. 8, 2023

Thomas Wise will conduct “Horse Eats Hat,” a new work by Herbert Grönemeyer. Herbert Fritsch directs a cast starring Raphael Clamer and Karl Heinz Brandt.

Performance Dates: Nov. 4, 2023 – May 5, 2024 

The family opera “Under the Sea” will be staged by Simeon Meier.

Performance Dates: Nov. 17, 2023

 Antú Romero Nunes will stage “The Threepenny Opera.”

Performance Dates: Jan. 13 – June 19, 2024

Maxime Pascal will conduct a new “Carmen” production by Constanza Macras. The cast stars Rachel Wilson and Jasmine Etezadzadeh in the title role alongside Sarah Brady, KyuChoi, Edgaras Montvidas, and Rolf Romei.

Performance Dates: Feb. 3 – June 11, 2024

Christopher Marthaler will direct “L’Incoronazione di Poppea.” Laurence Cummings conducts a cast starring Kerstin Avemo, Anne Sophie von Otter, Jake Arditti, and Owen Willetts.

Performance Dates: March 3 – May 23, 2024 

Ivor Bolton will conduct “Requiem.” The work, which will be directed by Romeo Castellucci, features music from Mozart’s famed Requiem, alongside other works.

Performance Dates: April 20 – June 15, 2024 

Tilman von Siepen directs “Mignon.” Hélio Vida conducts a cast starring Camille Sherman, Lulama Taifasi, Inna Fedorii, and Ronan Caillet, among others.

Revivals

Hélio Vida conducts “The Barber of Seville.”

Performance Dates: Oct. 14, 2023 – Jan. 13, 2024 

Titus Engel conducts “Der Freischütz.”

Performance Dates: Oct. 15 – Nov. 12, 2024 

Michele Spotti and Thomas Wise conduct “Rigoletto.” The cast stars Pavel Valuzhin, Nikoloz Lagvilava, Regula Mühlemann, and Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir.

Performance Dates: Nov. 30, 2023 – Jan. 21, 2024 

Kimon Barakos conducts “Storm,” starring Ikhanose Akhigbe, Lena Gysin, Fabian Hein, Karina Hill, Salome Immoos, and Anne Catherine Knuckleman.
