Jonathan Bloxham Named Chief Conductor of Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie

By Francisco Salazar

Jonathan Bloxham has been named the next Chief Conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Herford, Germany.

The decision was made after an extensive consultation with NWD musicians who decided on a successor by a large majority. At the start of the 2024-25 season, Bloxham will take over the position of NWD chief conductor for an initial period of three years.

He has repeatedly appeared as a guest conductor with the NWD and has made a lasting impression on the orchestra with his great musicality, efficient rehearsals, and expressive spontaneity at the concerts.

In a statement he said, “I am thrilled to accept the position of Chief Conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, an orchestra I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know over the past few seasons. I find their long-standing commitment to serving the communities of North Rhine-Westphalia very inspiring, and I am honoured to be given the opportunity to build upon the legacy of former Chief Conductors such as Andris Nelsons and Jonathon Heyward. I can’t wait to share all the exciting plans we have together over the coming years!”
