The New York Philharmonic Cancels Entire Season For First Time in History

By David Salazar

The New York Philharmonic has canceled the remainder of its 2020-21 season.

In an official statement on its website, the organization noted that the cancelation of the season was due to ongoing concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

The cancelation marks the first time in the organization’s 178-year history that an entire season is canceled in full.

President and CEO Deborah Borda noted in a letter online, that the company would fight on with a new program alongside NY Phil Bandwagon as well as its “Ny Phil Plays On” digital series.

The company also noted that it plans to announce its 2021-22 season in the spring of 2021.

The organization is the latest in the New York State area to shut down the entirety of its 2020-21 season following a similar announcement from the Metropolitan Opera back in late September.

Broadway also recently announced that it would keep its theaters closed until May 30, 2021.
