The Metropolitan Opera to Present ‘The Magic Flute’ for the Holiday Season

The Metropolitan Opera is set to present the annual holiday presentation of Julie Taymor’s English-language adaptation of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

The opera will be performed 17 times from Dec. 12 to Jan. 4.

The production is set to star tenor Duke Kim and soprano Aigul Khismatullina as well as Kathryn Lewek who has appeared a record 65 times on the Met stage as the Queen of the Night.

On Dec. 12, soprano Hera Hyesang Park and tenor David Portillo headline the first cast, reprising the roles of Pamina and Tamino. Rounding out the cast are baritone Will Liverman as Papageno, bass Soloman Howard as Sarastro, tenor Rodell Rosel as Monostatos, and bass William Guanbo Su as the Speaker, all reprising past Met portrayals.

On Dec. 13, soprano Emily Pogorelc makes her Met role debut as Pamina, joining Kim as Tamino. Bass Peixin Chen sings the role of Sarastro; baritone Sean Michael Plumb and bass-baritone Le Bu will make their Met role debuts as Papageno and the Speaker.

On Dec. 14, at 10 a.m., children and families are invited to experience the Met’s immersive Holiday Open House, with festive behind-the-scenes demonstrations by members of the Met’s backstage and artistic staff.

Nimrod David Pfeffer and J. David Jackson will share conducting duties.

“The Magic Flute” will be broadcast on Dec. 12, 18, 21, and 27 performances on the SiriusXM app.
