The Metropolitan Opera has announced that Evgeny Nikitin will sing the title role in all performances of the new production of Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer.”

Nikitin made his Met debut in 2002 in “War and Peace” and has since performed in productions of “Elektra,” “Boris Godunov,” “Parsifal,” “Tristan Und Isolde,” and “Götterdämmerung.” He recently performed in the New Year’s Eve gala with Anna Netrebko.

Sir Bryn Terfel withdrew from the production last week due to ankle surgery and was also forced to cancel recitals in Chicago and Carnegie Hall.

Nikitin joins a cast that includes Anja Kampe, Sergey Skorokhodov, Mihoko Fujimura, David Portillo and Franz-Josef Selig. Valery Gergiev conducts the new production by Francois Girard.

“Der Fliegende Holländer” opens on March 2.
