The Masterwork Chorus & Orchestra Cancels Carnegie Hall Concert Due to COVID-19

By Francisco Salazar

The Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra has canceled its Dec. 23 Carnegie Hall concert due to COVID-19.

The organization was set to perform all of Part I and festive solos and choruses from Parts II and III of Händel’s “Messiah,” including “Hallelujah,” “The Trumpet Shall Sound,” and “Worthy is the Lamb.” Soloists were set to include soprano Louise Fauteux, mezzo-soprano Alyson Harvey, tenor Jack Pott, and baritone Malcolm J. Merriweather.

The performance marks the latest cancelation in New York following the New York City Ballet’s “The Nutcracker,” City Lyric Opera’s “Cendrillon,” and Opera on Tap’s “The Longest Night.” New York is experiencing record COVID-19 numbers reporting more than 21,000 cases a day. The state is now offering a $100 booster incentive and opening new testing sites.

Carnegie Hall still plans to perform its New York String Orchestra concert on Dec. 24.
