‘The Game’ to Make World Premiere at Tête à Tête Opera Festival

By Afton Wooten

Elif Nur Karlidağ and Sam Redway’s new opera “The Game” is set to make its world premiere at the Tête à Tête Opera Festival.

“The Game” is a short interdisciplinary stage work that blends opera, technology, and live gameplay to create an immersive experience for the audience. It is scored for four singers, silent actor, and fixed/live electronics. In the opera, a Sisyphean narrative unfolds as the player attempts to escape from a labyrinth of their own escapisms, each new absurdity reflecting back to us the ways in which we let technology affect our lives.

The cast features Hester Dart, Eliran Kadussi, Lore Lixenberg, and Rachel Roper. Leo Doulton is the stage director, and Edo Frenkel serves as music director. Central to “The Game” is an actual video game, designed and programmed by Utkucan Eken specifically for this opera. A mini 2D game, reflecting the essence of the work, is available to play now at thegameopera.com. Additionally, a Twitch channel is livestreaming.

The premiere is scheduled for Sept. 28, at the The Cockpit in London.
