The Crossing & NY Phil to Present World Premiere of Julia Wolfe’s ‘unEarth’

By David Salazar

The Crossing is set to present the world premiere of Julia Wolfe’s “unEarth” alongside the New York Philharmonic.

The showcase, which is scheduled for June 1-3, 2023, will be conducted by Jaap van Zweden and will take place at David Geffen Hall in New York City. The program will also feature Sibelius’ Violin Concerto with Frank Huang as the soloist.

“unEarth” was commissioned by the NY Philharmonic and will feature soprano Else Torpe and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. Annie Kaufmann directs the piece.

Per an official press statement issued by The Crossing, “The piece is a multimedia event that includes projections and amplified sound that Wolfe says ‘digs deep into the stories and science of our planet — looking at forced migrations, adaptations, species land loss, and changing seas … singing our fears and hoping for a way forward.’ While the text sources range from Genesis to Dickinson, many of the words come from discussions about climate change and the environment with the Young People’s Chorus members.”
