Teatro São Carlos Terminates Artistic Director’s Contract

Ivan van Kalmthout’s contract as the artistic director of Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon has been terminated.

The Board of Director confirmed the news in a statement.

The statement added, “The artistic activity of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, namely the preparation and presentation of the 2024-2025 season, will continue with the greatest serenity, fulfilling its respective public service obligations.”

The Dutch director began in his position on July 1, 2023 and succeeded Elisabete Matos. His term was to have ended on June 30, 2027.

Van Kalmthout has previously worked as interim director of the Liceu Opera House in Barcelona and as director of the Berliner Staatsoper in Berlin, and in 2017 he joined the IVC board.
