Teatro Sannazaro Destroyed by Fire in Naples, Italy

The Teatro Sannazaro in Napoli, Italy was destroyed by a fire that is believed to have started in an apartment block in the Chiaia district.

According to the Associated Press, the fire started to spread rapidly to the nearby 19th-century theatre and eventually brought its domed roof crashing to the ground.

According to fire commander, “Very little of the theatre remains. Inside there are still some small hotspots that we will extinguish shortly. As for the causes, it’s still too early to say.”

According to initial reports, the fire was an accident.

The theatre opened on Dec. 26, 1847 where it hosted some of the great actors of its time. The theater was eventually converted to a poorly attended and run-down cinema due to the crisis after the war and in the 1960s, it was taken over by Nino Veglia and Luisa Conte, a Neapolitan theater duo.

The theater reopened on November 12, 1971. In recent years the theater hosted musical recitals and upcoming events included Trio Kobalt, Quartetto Armida, and Quartetto Prometeo.

This is the latest Italian theater to be destroyed in a fire. The Teatro La Fenice was famously burned and reopened in 2003 after a major rebuilding effort. In 1991, the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari was also destroyed and reopened in 2009.
