Teatro Real Announces Another Cast Change for ‘Turandot’

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro Real de Madrid has announced a cast change for its July 17 performance of Puccini’s “Turandot.”

The company said that Maribel Ortega will sing the title role replacing Ewa Płonka.

In an Instagram post, Płonka added that she had a “swollen larynx that resulted in a complete loss of voice.”

Ortega has interpreted the role of Turandot at the Ópera de Sabadell and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès. She is set to perform the role next season with the Fundació Òpera Catalunya.

Ortega is set to join a cast that includes Michael Fabiano as Calaf, Ruth Iniesta as Liù, and Liang Li as Timur. Nicola Luisotti leads the production by Robert Wilson.

Płonka returns to the production on July 20, 2023. “Turandot” runs through July 22, 2023.
