Teatro Nuovo Announces Day-Long Maria Callas Celebration

By David Salazar

Teatro Nuovo is joining the Maria Callas Centenary Celebration with “CALLAS: PAST AND FUTURE.”

The day-long event, scheduled for Dec. 2 at El Museo del Barrio in New York will feature numerous events spotlighting the famed opera icon.

“Teatro Nuovo, like all performers and fans of Bel Canto, owes everything to Callas,” said company director Will Crutchfield in an official press statement. “She opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed for many years.”

The showcase kicks off at 2:30 p.m. with an introductory talk by Crutchfield. Then at 3 p.m. audiences will see “Callas for the Future,” a live demonstration that explores the legacy of recorded artists with Callas at the center of it. At 4:15 p.m. audiences will hear from such pedagogues as Conrad L. Osborne, Peter Mark, and Bob Ziering about their experiences hearing Callas perform. An hour later, there will be a trivia game about the legendary diva.

A dinner break follows at 6 p.m. before audiences get a chance to experience a concert starring Teresa Castillo, Liz Culpepper, Chelsea Lehnea, Christine Lyons, Hannah Ludwig, Alina Tamborini, Derrek Stark, Markos Simopoulos, Kyle Oliver, Vincent Graña, and the Teatro Nuovo Chorus, with Lucy Tucker Yates, Will Crutchfield, and Derrick Goff on piano.
