The Staatsoper Hamburg has announced a cast change for its production of “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”

The company noted that Kristine Opolais will sing the role of Katerina Ismailova replacing Eva-Maria Westbroek.

Opolais also took to social media and said, “I am thrilled to share that I will return to Staatsoper Hamburg next month, to sing Katerina Izmailova in Shostakovich’s ‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk!’ Katerina has become one of my most beloved roles, and I am happy to have this opportunity to work for the first time with Maestro Kent Nagano. I will be surrounded by so many great colleagues and artists for this, including Pavel Cernoch as Sergey and Alexander Roslavets as Boris Timofeyevich Izmailov. Performances take place May 12, 16 & 18 – see you soon in Hamburg!”

Opolais made her role debut with the Boston Symphony this past winter and OperaWire wrote, “Opolais relished the role giving us different facets to her character.” She is also set to perform the role in Leipzig in May 2025.
