The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is set to present Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” at the 2023 Caracalla Festival.

The legendary film will be projected in a newly restored version from the Cineteca Nazionale di Bologna on June 23 and will be showcased with the Orchestra dell’Opera di Roma performing live. Timothy Brock conducts the score in a newly restored version curated by him.

“The Great Dictator” was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1940 and is a satire that tells the story of Dictator Adenoid Hynkel who tries to expand his empire while a poor Jewish barber tries to avoid persecution from Hynkel’s regime.

In a statement, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Superintendant Francesco Giambrone said, “The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma returns to the Caracalla for the second time since the pandemic and after the success of last summer, this year we have the objective of realizing an interdisciplinary festival.
