Teatro de la Maestranza Announces Conductor Change for ‘Carmen’

The Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville has announced a conductor change for its production of “Carmen.”

The company announced that Jacques Lacombe will conduct the production on June 13, 15, and 17, 2025, instead of Karel Mark Chichon, who originally announced.

The change comes after Elīna Garanča, Chicon’s wife, announced she would not perform in the Carmen production on the aforementioned dates due as she had never signed a contract. As a result, Maria Kataeva took over the performances.

Lacombe, who lat conducted at the Teatro de la Maestranza in 2019, is the Music Director of the Vancouver Opera and has held positions with the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse in France, Bonn Opera in Germany, Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, among others.

Lacombe will alternate with Salvador Vázquez at the podium. “Carmen is set to star Maria Kateva, Piero Pretti, Giulana Gianfaldoni, and Dalibor Jenis. The second cast will be led by Gabriela Flores, Alejandro del Cerro, María Miró, and Baadral Chuluunbaatar.
