Teatro alla Scala to Reinforce Dress Code

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala is enforcing its dress code with new signs placed at the entrance and the ticket offices at La Scala.

The theater is placing signs that say, “The public is kindly requested to dress in keeping with the decorum of the Theatre, out of respect for the Theatre and for other viewers. People wearing shorts or sleeveless T-shirts will not be allowed inside the auditorium; in this case, tickets will not be reimbursed.”

In a statement from La Scala, according to Connessi all’Opera, said, “The Management invites the public to choose clothing that is appropriate to the decorum of the Theater, respecting the Theater itself and other spectators.”

The new decision was made by the incoming General Director, Fortunato Ortombina. It is a reversal of more lenient years under Alexander Pereira, where the dress code was posted on the tickets, and under Dominque Meyer, who said, “I care that young people come, not how they are dressed.”
