Teatro Alla Scala General Director Offered Extra Year

By Francisco Salazar

Following the news that the Teatro alla Scala’s General Director Dominique Meyer would be replaced by Fortunato Ortombina, it has been reported that Meyer has been offered an extra year.

According to Italian media outlets, the chair of the Board Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has agreed to offer Meyer the extra year to end his tenure as originally contracted.

The news outlets also noted that with the parting of Meyer, Riccardo Chailly would also leave as the Music Director in 2026.

The agreement has yet to be confirmed and voted on.

The news comes after it was announced that Meyer would be let due to a 2023 government reform that provides for the prohibition of receiving assignments, positions, and collaborations for those who have completed the 70th year of age. The news came with protest from the orchestra which said, “At this moment it would be appropriate for the current superintendent and artistic director Dominique Meyer to be able to conclude his term in full capacity to what has already been planned for next season and the following one.”
