Teatro alla Scala Cancels ‘Aida’ Following Second COVID-19 Case

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro alla Scala has announced that the final performance of “Aida” has been canceled due to Francesco Meli’s positive COVID-19 test.

The company announced that after doing tests on the cast members and getting negative results, a second test was conducted that resulted in a second positive COVID-19 case. The company alerted the health authorities who suggested an immediate quarantine for the entire cast. As a result, the performance of “Aida” will be replaced by a concert featuring arias by “Aida,” “Nabucco,” and “La bohème” conducted by Fabio Luisi and starring Anita Hartig, Aida Garifullina, Jonas Kaufmann, and Simone Piazzola.

The Teatro alla Scala has been through a number of setbacks in the past week with the company canceling its press conference and announcing that it was unsure of whether or not performances could continue. Additionally, tenor Francesco Meli tested positive for COVID-19 and immediately went into quarantine in Genoa.
