The Teatro alla Scala has announced a cast change for Verdi’s Requiem on May 23, 2024.

The company said that Daniela Barcellona will replace Aigul Akhmetshina, who is ill. 

In a statement via social media, Akhmeshina said, I’m sad to announce that I won’t be able to perform in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem in Milan due to health issues. It all started during Tony’s gala and things have gotten worse. I need some time to get better. Thank you for understanding. Although I am upset, I am also happy that I will be back in Italy very soon. I am looking forward to making music with and for you in the future projects!”

The Verdi Requiem will be performed at the Basilica di San Marco, Milan on the historical occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first performance. Barcellona will join a cast that includes Marina Rebeka, Freddie De Tommaso, and Alexander Vinogradov. Riccardo Chailly conducts.
