Taras Konoshchenko & Andromahl Raptis Highlight Staatstheater Nürnberg’s 2019-20 Season

Staatstheater Nürnberg has announced its 2019-20 season, which will include a number of premieres.

Premieres

The season will open with Verdi’s “Don Carlos,” directed by Jens-Daniel Herzog. The cast will feature Tadeusz Szlenkier in the title role, alongside Nicolai Karnolsky as Philip II King of Spain, Emily Newton as Elisabeth of Valois, Martina Dike as Princess Eboli, Sangmin Lee as Rodrigo, and Taras Konoshchenko as The Grand Inquisitor. Joana Mallwitz will lead the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg.

Performance Dates: Sept. 29 – Nov. 22, 2019

Bernstein’s beloved classic “West Side Story,” directed and choreographed by Melissa King, will star Hans Kittelmann as Tony and Andromahl Raptis as Maria, alongside Myrthes Monteiro as Anita, Nivaldo Allves as Bernardo, David Boyd as Riff, Tobias Link as Schrank, Hans-Peter Frings as Krupke, and Jochen Kuhl as Doc. Rounding out the cast are Adrian Hochstrasser as Action, Stefan Mosonyi as Baby John, Stephen Zenker as A-Rab, Shane Landers as Big Deal, Luciano Mercoli as Diesel, Annakathrin Naderer as Anybodys, Samantha Turton as Graziella, Nicky Milford as Velma, Karina Rapley as Minnie, Clayton Sia as Chino, Danilo Brunetti as Pepe, Danilo Aiello as Luis, Richard Patrocinio as Nibbles, David Eisinger as Indio, Yara Hassan as Rosalia, Giulia Fabris as Consuelo, and Julia Fechter as Teresita. Lutz de Veer will conduct. There will be a live broadcast of the premiere on BR Klassik.

Wolfgang Katschner will lead the orchestra during Cavalli’s “La Calisto.” Jens-Daniel Herzog will direct, with set by Mathis Neidhardt and costumes by Sibylle Gädeke. The Bewegungsensemble des Staatstheater Nürnberg will be featured. Casting details are TBA.

Tatjana Gürbaca will direct Massenet’s “Manon,” with orchestra led by Guido Johannes Rumstadt. The Chor des Staatstheater Nürnberg will be featured. Casting details are TBA.

Annika Nitsch will direct Udo Zimmermann’s Weisse Rose,” with set and costumes by Linda Siegismund. Volker Hiemeyer will conduct. Casting details are TBA.

In cooperation with Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona and Heilkon Opera Moscow, Staatstheater Nürnberg will present Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein’s “The Demon,” with set and costumes by Hartmut Schörghofer. Dmitry Bertmann will direct, and Lutz de Veer will conduct. The Chor des Staatstheater Nürnberg will be featured. There will be a live broadcast of the premiere on BR Klassik.

In cooperation with the Theater Dortmund, Staatstheater Nürnberg will present Britten’s “Peter Grimes.” Tilman Knabe will direct, with set by Annika Haller and costumes by Eva-Mareike Uhlig. A co-production with the Opera Ballet Vlaaderen and Teatro Real de Madrid, Staatstheater Nürnberg will present Hèctor Parra’s “Die Wohlgesinnten,” directed by Calixto Bieito with set by Rebecca Ringst and costumes by Ingo Krügler. Björn Huestege will conduct. The Chor des Staatstheater Nürnberg will be featured. Casting details are TBA.

Laura Scozzi will direct Rossini’s “L’Italiana in Algeri,” starring Martin Platz as Lindoro, Almerija Delic as Isabella, Taras Konoshchenko as Mustafa, Emily Bradley as Elvira, Irina Maltseva as Zulma, Wonyong Kang as Haly, and Denis Milo as Taddeo. Guido Johannes Rumstadt will conduct.

Performance Dates: Oct. 6 – Nov. 24, 2019

In cooperation with the Theater Pfütze and Theater Erlangen, Staatstheater Nürnberg will present Johann Casimir Eule and Wiebke Hetmanek’s children’s opera “Der kleine Barbier” (or “Eine haarige Angelegenheit”), based on Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” Ulrich Proschka will direct, and Andreas Paetzold will conduct. The cast will include Nikolae Sergejev as Almaviva and Daeho Kim as Bartolo.

Lutz de Veer will conduct Puccini’s “La Bohème,” with direction, set, and costumes by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolina Parditka. The Chor des Staatstheater Nürnberg and Jugendchor des Lehrergesangvereins Nürnberg will be featured. Casting details are TBA.
