Synchromy to Preview New ‘Sally Ride’ Opera

By David Salazar

Synchormy is set to present a workshop for “Sally Ride,” a new work by composer Dana Kaufmann and librettist Aiden Feltkamp.

The event, presented as part of the Sychromy Opera Workshop Series and California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, will take place at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12, 2023 at 2220 Arts + Archives in Los Angeles. Audiences will hear such artists as Miriam Adhanom, Mia Barcia-Colombo, Xenia Deviatkina-Loh, Joe Dvorak, Dara Gallagher, Tiffany Ho, Michael Jones, Ben Lin, Alejandra Martinez, Rohan Ramanan,  and Lorenzo Zapata.

The work explores the story of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space who didn’t come out as gay until her obituary in 2012 revealed this part of her identity.

The work is being developed in partnership with the National Air and Space Museum, Sally Ride Science, and OPERA America. The team is also working with Dr. Tam O’Shaughnessy, Ride’s life and business partner, who is serving as a biographical advisor. “Sally Ride” was developed through funding from OPERA America’s Opera Grants for Women Composers: Discover Grants as well as the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
