Summermusik has named Pittsburgh-based composer Charles Peck the winner of its third annual Kreitler Commission Competition.

Peck, a University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music alumnus, will compose a new work for chamber orchestra to receive its world premiere by the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra during the 2027 Summermusik Festival. The work will subsequently be performed during the 2027-28 season by the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and Reno Chamber Orchestra. Peck is also set to receive a $10,000 prize.

“His work stood out among nearly 300 submissions from many talented composers, which is a testament to his unique compositional ability,” Executive Director Evan Gidley, per an official press release.

Composers Jacob Bancks and Oswald Huýnh were named first and second runners-up, respectively.

The Kreitler Commission Competition was established in memory of 10-time Emmy Award-winning composer John Henry Kreitler, a Summermusik Board of Trustees member who helped launch the competition before his death in January 2024.
