Staatsoper Berlin Extends Contract of Director Matthias Schulz

By Logan Martell

The Board of Trustees of the Berlin Opera Foundation has approved the contract extension of Matthias Schulz as Director of the Staatsoper Berlin; he will now serve in this role until 2024.

Schulz joined the company in 2016, became a co-director with Jürgen Flimm in 2017, and eventually became sole director the following year.

“After the long renovation phase of the Unter den Linden building, Matthias Schulz successfully helped shape the relocation of the State Opera back to its headquarters and the associated repositioning of the opera house in the international music scene,” Dr. Klaus Lederer, who is Senator for Culture and Europe as well as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Staatsoper Berlin, said in a statement. “I am therefore personally very happy that I was able to win Matthias Schulz for an extension and that he is now staying for four more years.

“I am convinced that he is the right person to continue to lead the State Opera with skill and the necessary foresight. “
