Spanish Tenor Francisco Vas Announces Retirement from the Stage

Tenor Francisco Vas has announced his retirement following the final performance of Verdi’s “Otello” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The tenor born in Zaragoza was performing the role of Roderigo in all performances of the opera under Gustavo Dudamel.

Vas made his debut at the Liceu during the 1993-94 season in “La fille du régiment,” and returned for productions of “Les contes d’Hoffmann,” The Ring Cycle, “Tosca,” “Norma,” “Carmen,” “Benvenuto Cellini,” “Simon Boccanegra,” “Tristan und Isolde,” and “Turandot.”

The tenor also appeared in a number of recordings with the Liceu including “Turandot,” “Tristan und Isolde,” “Manon,” “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk,” and “Pique Dame.”

Vas went on to sing at the Teatro Real, Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid, Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla, Palacio Euskalduna de Bilbao, Opéra Bastille de París,  and Teatro Nacional de São Carlos de Lisboa. Among his most recognized roles included Incredibile in “Andrea Chénier,” Scaramuccio in “Ariadne auf Naxos,” Cassio in “Otello,” Guillot de Morfontaine in “Manon,” Goro in “Madama Butterfly,” Bob Boles in “Billy Budd,” Armand des Grieux in “Boulevard Solitude,” Arbace in “Idomeneo,”  and Pang in “Turandot.”
