Spain’s Minister of Culture & Sport Wants to Reschedule Canceled Performances

By David Salazar

Spain’s minister of culture and sport José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes has stated that the best way to help artists through the current crisis is to rescheduled performances that were recently canceled.

The official stated publicly that he has no desire to cancel events that were unable to take place as a result of the spread of COVID-19. Rodríguez Uribes has, however, not offered up a concrete plan on how he will realize his statements. Most countries around the world have not made any such statements of intent and are looking toward what the 2020-21 season will bring with regards to cultural events.

This response comes days after several organizations associated with the arts presented Rodríguez Uribes with a list of 52 different possibilities to help with the cultural sector, which has seen over 30,000 performances and events canceled with over 130 million euros in losses.

Throughout the crisis, Rodríguez Uribes has repeatedly noted that the situation rises above just concerns regarding culture and arts and that those, and other, sectors will be taken care of once the worst has passed. He has made little mention of artists struggling financially as a result of contract cancelations.
