Soundstreams Announced As Semifinalists for Opera America’s ‘Digital Excellence in Opera’

By David Salazar

Soundstreams is a semifinalist for the Opera America’s Award for Digital Excellence in Opera.

The company was hailed for its production of “Garden of Vanished Pleasures” by composers Cecilia Livingston and Donna McKevitt. The work was directed by Tim Albery and features design by Michelle Tracey, digital projections by Cam Davis, and musical direction by Rachael Kerr.

The work is inspired by the work of Derek Jarman, an artist, author, filmmaker, stage designer, experimental gardener and queer rights activist who died of AIDS in 1994.

“The production takes us on an emotional journey through love, loss and resurrection. Its songs draw their searing poignancy from the poetry and other diverse writings found in Jarman’s journals and set by Donna McKevitt, and equally from Cecilia Livingston’s heartfelt songs whose music and texts resonate so perfectly with McKevitt’s,” the company said in an official press statement.

The finals will take place in November in North America.
