Infinite Opera to Present ‘Besse: Water, Rye and Hops’

By David Salazar

Infinite Opera is set to present “Besse: Water, Rye and Hops” on July 24-26, 2024 at Signature Brew in London.

The opera triptych is described as a fight against the patriarchy via fermentation. The opera centers on Besse, a fictional brewster living through the Black Death who battles the changing trade of brewing, and the escalating fear of witchcraft.

“It takes the audience on a musical journey through the rich and forgotten history of women and beer from the comfort of a seat in a local craft brewery taproom,” says the official press statement.

The opera was created by conductor/composer Daniel Blanco and soprano/librettist Roxanne Korda and features an eight-piece cast and six-piece ensemble comprised of alumni of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Signature Brew on this three day run of the epic and tragic story of Besse, a stout brewster caught in the nexus of a society of extremes. This is an IPActful opera as you have never experienced it, infused with delicious craft beer from the audience to the stage – sometimes merrily crispy, sometimes dramatically sour, and sometimes bitterly sweet. These are definitely two hours of refreshingly zingy and hoppy music for all,” Infinite Opera notes in an official quote.
