Soprano Jessica Fishenfeld Teams Up with Baritone Matthew Gamble for ‘Mother to Song’ Art Song Video

By David Salazar

Soprano Jessica Fishenfeld is set to launch a new art song video “Mother to Song” on July 4, 2020.

The video, which was conceived and sung by baritone Matthew Gamble, was directed and edited by Fishenfeld. The art song was composed by Scott Joiner and includes a poem by Langston Hughes of the same title. Also on the video are dancer Chanel Howard and pianist Jason Thomas.

“Eight months ago I came up with an idea to set my FAVORITE poem by Langston Hughes, ‘Mother to Son’ to music,” Gamble said in a statement. “I was also inspired, after working for five years with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, to feature a beautiful dancer to help tell the story. After teaming up with the brilliant Scott Bradley Joiner, we created something that is so dear to my heart. I first read this poem at 9-years-old during a Black History Month program in Minnesota, and its stayed with me ever since. The words have always meant so much to me, and I believe in the current social climate, it just might help you get through, even if just for five minutes. In the spirit of collaboration, I enlisted some of my dearest colleagues to help me bring this piece to light.”

You can watch the video here starting on July 4 a 12 p.m. EDT.
