By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva and Freddie de Tommaso are set to revive Giordano’s “Marina.”

The performances will be held on Feb. 12 and 14, 2026 at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and will feature the world premiere of the lost opera in a critical edition by ura di Andreas Gies, Editio Princeps, Libreria Musicale Italiana, Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Umberto Giordano. The two stars will be joined by Ernesto Petti and Mihai Damian, while Vincenzo Milletarì will conduct the Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali. There will be a recording made for the occasion.

“Marina” will mark Yoncheva’s third Giordano opera following performances of “Siberia” and “Andrea Chenier,” for which she received great acclaim.

“Marina” was Giordano’s first opera, written for a competition in 1888; the opera placed sixth that year with Mascagni’s iconic “Cavalleria Rusticana” coming away with the top prize that year.
