Sonya Yoncheva Cancels Performances Of ‘La Traviata’ At La Scala

Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva has withdrawn from the final three performances of Verdi’s “La Traviata” at Teatro alla Scala on March 12, 14, & 17, 2019, according to the company’s website.

Yoncheva will be replaced in the role of Violetta by soprano Angel Blue. Blue has recently sung the role with both the Royal Opera House and Manitoba Opera. Other recent credits include Musetta and Mimi in “La Boheme” with the Metropolitan Opera, Bess in “Porgy and Bess” at McCaw Hall in Seattle, Marguerite in “Faust” with Portland Opera, and Liu in “Turandot” with the San Diego Opera. Upcoming performances include recitals in Los Angeles and Toronto, Mimi with the Canadian Opera Company, the title role of “Tosca” at Festival d’Aix en Provence, and Bess at the Met Opera.

The March performances of “La Traviata” at La Scala will also feature Francesco Meli as Alfredo Germont and Plácido Domingo as Giorgio Germont. Marco Armiliato will conduct.

Yoncheva is scheduled to appear in concert in Budapest, Monte-Carlo, and Mannheim in March, and will return to the opera stage as Desdemona in Verdi’s “Otello” in Germany.
