Sondra Radvanovsky & Holiday Classics Highlight Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend

By David Salazar

Those who checked out our weekend recommendations from last weekend won’t be surprised with some of the choices that will show up on today’s list. But there are two other rare and unique opera experiences to be had. Here are our top five operas to see this weekend.

Der Freischutz – Heartbeat Opera, New York

Hearbeat Opera is undeniably one of the most unique opera experiences in New York and this will undoubtedly be no different. The famed opera will be remixed in this new production with some unique new music for the famed Wolf Canyon Scene. Performances are set for Friday through Sunday.

El Recuerdo del Milagro – Houston Grand Opera, Texas

Few companies have put as much into championing Latin American opera as the Houston Grand Opera. This year’s production of “El Milagro del Recuerdo” will feature Cecilia Duarte, Daniel Noyola, Miguel de Aranda, Vanessa Alonzo, Rafael Moras, Vanessa Becerra, Héctor Vásquez, and Claudia Chapa. Trio Capultepec will also perform. The weekend performance is set for Sunday.

Amahl and the Night Visitors – On Site Opera, New York

We warned you last weekend that this would probably show up on a weekly basis for the remainder of this month. “All in all, this was as stirring an experience as we ever get from live theater,” stated our review of last year’s production by On Site Opera. There is likely to be no doubt that this year’s revival, which will take place at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in New York City, is bound to be equally memorable. From Friday through Sunday there will be a whopping four total performances.

Hansel and Gretel – Palm Beach Opera, Florida & Opera Las Vegas, Nevada

Don’t forget about the famed Humperdinck opera as part of your weekly doses. It’s the holiday season and these two productions from opera companies on opposite sides of the country will undoubtedly be a great opportunity to bring the family. Out in Florida, you can experience the opera Friday through Sunday, while Vegas’ “small scale” production can be witnessed Saturday and Sunday. Some might be adventurous enough to fly cross country to catch them both.

The Three Queens – Lyric Opera of Chicago

Saturday will be the final performance of this concert which stars Sondra Radvanovsky in music by Donizetti from his Tudor Trilogy. Radvanovsky is undeniably one of the greatest singers in the world and this the very repertory in which she thrives. Bel Canto specialist Riccardo Frizza conducts the evening.
