The Slovak National Theatre’s Music Director Martin Leginus has resigned from his position.

The conductor resigned due to “the unacceptable and unsustainable situation into which the SND has been led by the departmental management when the SND has been left without a regular statutory representative for the third week.”

Leginus said, “The operation of the SND Opera in the form in which it is supposed to function is blocked. I do not agree with leaving such a state and I refuse to accept responsibility for the consequences caused by the non-resolution of this situation on the part of the departmental leadership.”

The news comes after the Ministry of Culture removed Matej Drlička and Alexandra Kusá as the directors of the Slovak National Theatre and Slovak National Gallery. The Minister said that the removal was due to “political activism.”

Leginus is the latest musician to resign from a major position in the country. Earlier this week Robert Jindra resigned as Chief Conductor of the Kosice State Philharmonic after criticizing the Ministry of Culture.
