Glimmerglass Festival Surpasses Fundraising Goal, Sets New Milestone
By Francisco SalazarThe Glimmerglass Festival has announced that donors from around the region and country have stepped up to donate $6.7 million to the festival as part of a fundraising effort in celebration of their 50th year.
The new donation will shatter the campaign’s initial $5 million goal three months earlier than expected, and as a result, a new goal of $7.5 million has been announced to ensure another 50 years.
In a statement, Rob Ainsley, Artistic & General Director of The Glimmerglass Festival, said, “Our incredible Board of Trustees and I were confident we would reach our original goal, but none of us could be prepared for the outpouring of generosity we have witnessed in such a short period of time. Where we are right now, and where we are now committing to go with this campaign, reflect the passion of our donors, patrons, and broader community. They are propelling us to go further as we deliver on our mission by leading, teaching, and innovating in the worlds of opera and musical theater.”
Launched quietly in the fall of 2024 and publicly this spring, the campaign supports the internationally renowned opera nonprofit. The new $7.5 million fundraising goal is buoyed by two extraordinary gifts to the Festival. First, a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor was issued as a challenge to the organization, to be unlocked by a single matching gift of $1 million.
Board Treasurer Mark Luis Villamar and his wife, Esther Milsted, answered the call with a $1 million gift. The couple hopes to be an example that will inspire others to reach higher to ensure the company continues to provide opportunities for generations to come.
The Glimmerglass Festival opens July 11 with Puccini’s “Tosca.”
