Saioa Hernández, Nina Stemme, Brandon Jovanovich, Ève-Maud Hubeaux, Klaus Florian Vogt, Piero Pretti Lead Deutsche Oper Berlin’s 2021-22 Season

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced all the premieres of its 2021-22 season. Here is a look.

The “Best of Carmen” concert will spotlight Valeriia Savinskaia, Arianna Manganello, Elena Tsallagova, Matthew Newlin, Joel Allison, and Ève-Maud Hubeaux in the title role. Daniel Carter conducts a production by Silke Sense.

Performance dates: Aug. 21 – 29, 2021

Mark-Anthony Turnage’s “Greek” showcases Dean Murphy, Irene Roberts, Seth Carico, and Heidi Stober. Yi-Chen Lin conducts a production by Pınar Karabulut.

Performance dates: Aug. 27 – Sep. 8, 2021

Mané Galoyan performs Violetta Valéry, and Andrei Danilov portrays Alfredo Germont in the “Best of La Traviata” concert performances. The cast also includes Dong-Hwan Lee, Karis Tucker, Alexandra Hutton, Andrew Dickinson, Stephen Bronk, Dean Murphy, and Patrick Cook. Dominic Limburg conducts a production by Gerlinde Pelkowski.

Andrej Koroliov’s “Die Vorüberlaufenden” features Valeriia Savinskaia, Arianna Manganello, Philipp Jekal, and Samueol Park with Vicente Larrañaga conducting a production by Theresa von Halle.

Performance dates: Sep. 24 – Oct. 7, 2021

Britten‘s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” stars James Hall as Oberon, Jane Archibald as Tytania, Gideon Poppe as Lysander, Dean Murphy as Demetrius, Karis Tucker as Hermia, and Alexandra Hutton as Helena.

The cast will be rounded out by Padraic Rowan, Davia Bouley, Patrick Guetti, Tyler Zimmerman, Andrew Dickinson, Jörg Schörner, and Matthew Cossack. Markus Stenz conducts a production by Ted Huffman.

Performance dates: Sep. 30 – Oct. 15, 2021

Wagner‘s “Götterdämmerung” will star Simon O’Neill as Siegfried, Nina Stemme as Brünnhilde, Markus Brück as Alberich, and Thomas Lehman as Gunther. The cast also includes Gidon Saks, Aile Asszonyi, Okka von der Damerau, Karis Tucker, and Meechot Marrero. Sir Donald Runnicles conducts a production by Stefan Herheim.

Performance dates: Oct. 17 – 31, 2021

Das Rheingold” features Derek Welton, Joel Allison, Attilio Glaser, Thomas Blondelle, Markus Brück, Ya-Chung Huang, Andrew Harris, Tobias Kehrer, Annika Schlicht, Flurina Stucki, Judit Kutasi, Valeriia Savinskaia, Arianna Manganello, and Karis Tucker. Sir Donald Runnicles conducts a production by Stefan Herheim.

Performance date: Oct. 22, 2021

The new season will see the return of Stefan Herheim’s production of “Die Walküre with Brandon Jovanovich as Siegmund, Elisabeth Teige as Sieglinde, Nina Stemme as Brünnhilde, John Lundgren as Wotan, and Tobias Kehrer as Hunding. Annika Schlicht, Flurina Stucki, Aile Asszonyi, Rebecca Pedersen, Judit Kutasi, Ulrike Helzel, and Karis Tucker round out the cast with Sir Donald Runnicles conducting.

Performance date: Oct. 29, 2021

Rued Langgaard’s “Antikrist” spotlights Thomas Lehman, Jonas Grundner-Culemann, Valeriia Savinskaia, Irene Roberts, Thomas Blondelle, Flurina Stucki, Seth Carico, and Michael König. Stephan Zilias conducts a production by Ersan Mondtag.

Performance dates: Jan. 30 – Feb. 18, 2022

Saioa Hernández performs Hélène, and Piero Pretti stars as Henri in Olivier Py’s production of Verdi‘s “Les Vêpres Siciliennes.” Arianna Manganello, Thomas Lehman, Roberto Tagliavini, Andrew Dickinson, Jörg Schörner, Padraic Rowan, Andrei Danilov, Tyler Zimmerman, and Andrew Harris round out the cast with Enrique Mazzola conducting.

Performance dates: March 20 – June 25, 2022

Lynsey Peisinger conducts Marina Abramovic’s production of “7 Deaths of Maria Callas,” with a cast yet to be announced.

Performance dates: April 8 – 10, 2022

Franz Schreker’s “Der Schatzgräber” spotlights Eva Maria Neubauer, Clemens Bieber, Joel Allison, Michael Laurenz, Thomas Johannes Mayer, Seth Carico, Gideon Poppe, Daniel Johansson, Stephen Bronk, Elisabet Strid, and Patrick Cook. Marc Albrecht conducts a production by Christof Loy.

Performance dates: May 1 – June 11, 2022

Bernhard Gander’s “Lieder von Vertreibung und Nimmerwiederkehr” will feature soloists of the Deutsche Oper Berlin’s ensemble and the Ensemble Modern. Alize Zandwijk is the director.

Performance dates: May 21 – 26, 2022

A season packed with Wagner’s works comes to a close with Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito’s production of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” The opera stars Klaus Florian Vogt as Walther von Stolzing, Rachel Harnisch as Eva, and Johan Reuter as Hans Sachs. The cast also includes Albert Pesendorfer, Gideon Poppe, Philipp Jekal, Thomas Lehman, Jörg Schörner, Clemens Bieber, Burkhard Ulrich, Stephen Bronk, Tobias Kehrer, and Annika Schlicht. Sir Donald Runnicles conducts.

Performance dates: June 12 – July 9, 2022

Ring Cycle

Wagner’s iconic “Der Ring des Nibelungen” will get three cycles. “Siegfried” will premiere on Nov. 12, 2021 as a part of the first cycle and will star Nina Stemme as Brünnhilde, Iain Paterson as Der Wanderer, Tobias Kehrer as Fafner, Judit Kutasi as Erda, Jordan Shanahan as Alberich, and Clay Hilley in the title role.

Cycle 1 performance dates: Nov. 9 – 14, 2021

Cycle 2 performance dates: Nov. 17 – 21, 2021

Cycle 3 performance dates: Jan. 4 – 9, 2022
