Ruben Valenzuela to Lead Handel and Haydn Society’s “Baroque Christmas”
By David SalazarHandel and Haydn Society is set to present “Baroque Christmas” on Dec. 19 and 22, 2024.
The showcase will be headlined by Ruben Valenzuela, the Founder and Artistic Director of Bach Collegium San Diego for a program of Bach Cantatas and Antonio de Salazar’s “Conceptio Gloriosae,” Francisco Lopez Capillas’ “Canticum Beatae Mariae Virginis Magnificat,” and Juan de Araujo’s “Ay andar, a tocar, a baylar.”
“This program of music of the German high baroque alongside a diverse array of music from Mexico and South America will refresh and inspire you this holiday season,” said David Snead, Philip and Marjorie Gerdine President and CEO of the Handel and Haydn Society, in an official press release. “Baroque music from Latin America is rarely programmed in the United States, and it’s even rarer to hear this music played on period instruments. We’re delighted to welcome Ruben Valenzuela, a masterful interpreter of this repertoire, to lead H+H and share this extraordinary music in Boston.”
Prior to each performance Teresa Neff, Ph.D., the Christopher Hogwood Historically Informed Performance Fellow, will present “Musically Speaking” and provide context for the showcase. The Dec. 19 concert commences at 7:30 p.m. and the Dec. 22 one starts at 3 p.m.
