Royal School of Church Music Publishes New Critical Edition of Sir John Stainer’s ‘The Crucifixion’

By Logan Martell

The Royal School of Church Music has announced the publication of a new Critical Edition of Sir John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion,” edited by leading expert Professor Jeremy Dibble.

This new edition features extensive introductory, editorial, and performance notes, as well as facsimile pages from the original Stainer manuscript recently given to the Durham University Library.

First premiering in 1887, “The Crucifixion: A Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer,” is an oratorio scored in 20 movements for SATB choir and organ, with solos for bass and tenor. The work was written for St. Marylebone Parish Church in London, and modeled after Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion.” There have been annual performances within the church since then, with the April 7 Good Friday performance of the work to use this new edition for this time.

“This is an exciting and important addition to RSCM’s catalogue,” said Bertie Baigent, Director of Music at St. Marylebone Parish Church in an official press statement. “Authoritatively edited, clearly laid out, and handsomely presented, this volume is ideal for every choir performing this classic work.”
