Royal Opera Houses Announces Two Cast Changes for ‘Il Trovatore’

By Francisco Salazar

The Royal Opera House has announced two cast changes for its June 8 production of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”

The company said, “Sadly, Riccardo Massi (Manrico) and Jamie Barton (Azucena) have withdrawn from tomorrow evening’s performance of ‘Il Trovatore’ after testing positive for COVID-19.”

As a result, Stefano La Colla will make his Covent Garden debut performing the role of Manrico, having sung the role in the same production at Opernhaus Zürich. Meanwhile, the role of Azucena will be performed by Yulia Matochkina, who also sang the role at Opernhaus Zurich and is currently at the Royal Opera House in rehearsals for “Don Carlo.” This is also her Royal Opera debut.

The two will join a cast that includes Marina Rebeka and Ludovic Tézier. Sir. Antonio Pappano conducts the new production by Adele Thomas.
