Royal Opera House Announces Cast Change For June 26 ‘Carmen’
By David SalazarThe casting revamp for the Royal Opera House’s upcoming “Carmen” continues with the announcement that mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina will be taking over the performance on June 26.
Anaïk Morel was originally set to perform on that date, though she will remain in the title role for seven other performances on June 22, 24, 28 and July 10, 13, 16, and 20. Akhmetshina was originally only scheduled for two shows on July 2 and 5, but this additional performance on the 26 brings her total to three.
The opera was originally set to star Clémentine Margaine, but the famed interpreter of the role has withdrawn from her performances.
Akhmetshina has been a Jette Parker Young Artists at the Royal Opera House performing in numerous productions such as “La Tragédie de Carmen,” “Carmen,” “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” “La traviata” and “La Forza del Destino.” Morel will be making her ROH debut in this run of performances.
Morel and Akhmetshina will join a cast that includes Bryan Hymel, Luca Pisaroni, Ailyn Pérez, and Kristina Mkhitaryan alternating as Michaëla. Julia Jones and Chistopher Willis will conduct the production, which is directed by Barrie Kosky.
