Roberto Alagna to Play Al Capone in Upcoming Work

By Logan Martell

Famed tenor Roberto Alagna will be taking on the role of Al Capone in an upcoming French musical titled “Capone et les incorruptibles,” currently projected to premiere in January of 2022.

Alagna made the announcement on Instagram, saying: “The musical is likely to be the major entertainment event of the year 2022! I am thrilled to be part of this artistical adventure.”

The book and score are done by Jean-Felix Lalanne, who has composed music for a number of albums and film soundtracks. On casting Alagna, Lallane noted, “Roberto was the ideal choice, his Italian origins, of course, but also because Capone adored opera… He has been a friend for a long time and we have always sought to work together, so that I can write for him. We did things that did not come out. With the period of confinement he was available, he read and loved it.”

Lallane went on to mention that the work will feature music with authentic period colors, as well as pieces based on more modern sounds that will be used for choreographed moments. The plot will also see a love story between one of Capone’s sisters and Eliot Ness, with Lallane taking the history and giving it a passionate retelling for the stage.
