The Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth’s basement was flooding causing major damage.

According to the News5 agency, the flooding happened on March 18 and caused the damage of 4,000 books and manuscripts.

The Museum Director Dr. Sven Friedrich confirmed the incident and noted that a third of the books in the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth were damaged.

He also noted that the boxes that contained the books are currently in the exhibition area of the Siegfried Wagner House and were taken there by the fire department on Friday to get them dry.

As a result, the Siegfried Wagner House is currently not accessible to visitors and the books will be brought to a freeze-dryer as quickly as possible.

Friedrich said the flood was caused by a “chain of unfortunate circumstances.” He noted “that the books were in boxes in a side room in the basement with a water pipe, where the water is drained. It is not clear whether it is a technical or a human error, but there is no time to clarify who is at fault.”

The Siegfried Wagner House is set to reopen on Thursday if everything goes according to plan.
