Rice’s Shepherd School of Music to Present ‘Eugene Onegin’

By David Salazar

Rice’s Shepherd School of Music is set to present Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” on Nov. 3 and 5, 2023.

The production will be directed by Paul Curran and conducted by Stephanie Rhodes Russell. The opera stars Daniela Machado as Tatyana and Adam Partridge in the title role. Other cast members include Gabriel Natal Baéz, Katherine Dobbs, William Dopp, Kellan Dunlap, Viviana Goodwin, Collin LaHood, James McCarthy, Kyubin Moon, and Camille Robles.

“It is thrilling to present such a big, important staple of the repertoire for my first production as director of opera at the Shepherd School,” said Joshua Winograde, the director of Opera Studies at the university. “It is not an easy piece to mount, and we could not do it without an ace team of experts to guide the students through this challenging material, both the singers on stage and the instrumentalists in the orchestra pit.”

The Nov. 3 performance kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with the second show set for a 2 p.m. start time.
